Winemakers invite friends and relatives into their vineyards so that everyone may pick grapes and help out with traditional tasks in the family spirit. Part of the custom is also an abundance of home treats prepared by the housewives for the pickers. During the time of merriment and expectation of new wine, the town of Vipava has been organizing the greatest celebration of the harvest in the valley for an unbroken half a century – the Vipava Grape Harvest. Throughout history, Vipava played an important role in the regional development of winegrowing and is now considered the capital of the Vipava Valley wine trade. Part of its rich heritage is on display in the Museum of Winemaking. For decades, vibrant tradition and joy have been fuelling the entertaining event in Vipava, which throughout its three days attracts thousands of curious visitors. The pinnacle of the Vipava Grape Harvest each ear is the crowning of the Wine Queen. Within the framework of the event, expert scoring of Vipava Valley wines takes place annually, with seals of excellence awarded at the central Sunday festivities in the Vipava Square.
