We reach the starting point of the marked trail in the village of Kamnje by passing the cemetery and crossing a stone bridge. The steep, well-marked trail takes us toward Mala Gora, the plateau on the slopes of Mt. Čaven, overlooking the Vipava Valley. Even far into the past century, farmers used these mountain meadows to harvest hay for their livestock after the one in the valley below had already been harvested and put away. In the days of yore, this trail was used to transport the hay back down. The Kamnje Mountaineering Section has organized a traditional hike along this route every Easter Monday since 1998.
From Mala Gora, the trail descends back to the valley along a slightly gentler but longer route via St. Paul's Hill (Školj sv. Pavla), featuring the vestiges of ancient Roman-era walls and a water tower, in addition to a small church that was restored a few years ago. The hill also features several informational panels, giving a glimpse into the area's rich natural and cultural heritage. The path back to the starting point in Kamnje leads through three hamlets of Vrtovin: Lozarji, Guštini and Črmeli.
