Hiking trail

From Renče to Mt Trstelj

The highest hill in the Slovenian Karst, Mt Trstelj (643 m) is also the highest peak of the Black Hills (Črni hribi) range, rising over the plateau of the Trieste-Komen Karst between Lipa and Opatje Selo and descending toward the Vipava Valley between Dorberk and Miren.

Starting at the parking lot at the main square in Renče, we head left toward the elementary school building and after about 200 metres, turn right at the school. We continue along the side road until the first fork in the road, where we turn right again. Here, the road ascends slightly, and we turn right once more at the first intersection. After approximately 200 meters, at the next fork, we turn right again. We continue the hike along the paved road, which soon turns into a forest road. At the next fork, we turn right, and the forest road begins to gently ascend. Higher up, we join the main cross forest road, which runs along a longer gentle and steady ascent. Reaching the marked trail branching off to the right from the forest road, we follow that trail. After a few minutes of hiking across a grassy slope, we turn right at the next fork, where the trail begins to ascend more steeply. The path leads us back into a coniferous forest. Along this section, trail markers guide us toward the Stjenkova Hut on Mt Trstelj. At the fork of the forest road, near the hut, we turn right and soon reach the summit of Mt Trstelj, which offers an amazing view in all directions. In addition to the northern view of Nova Gorica, the Vipava Valley, and the surrounding hills, which you may have already enjoyed during the climb, the peak also affords views of the Gulf of Trieste and Gulf of Piran, the Karst plateau, the Črni Hribi ridge extending toward Branik, and, in fair weather, the outline of the Slavnik hills.

Upon our return, we can stop at the Stjenkova Hut on Mt Trstelj.
